Geological Formation

Belgian Bluestone, also known as Petit Granit known, originated around 350 million years ago during the early Carboniferous period (Tournaisian), when large parts of present-day Belgium were covered by a tropical sea.

This limestone consists primarily of the remains of marine organisms, in particular crinoids (sea lilies), shells, corals, and other fossil deposits. Over millions of years, these sediments were compacted by pressure and sedimentation into a compact, resilient stone, which is valued today for its robustness and durability.

Origin & Extraction

The main quarries are located in Hainaut and the Ourthe Valley. The bluestone is extracted in open-pit mines ; blocks weighing up to 20 tons can be detached from the rock face. This natural, long-lasting material is extracted sustainably and guarantees high quality for all applications.

Material Composition & Technical Properties

• Rock type: bioclastic limestone ("Petit Granit")
• Carbonate content: 96–99%
• Quartz: 0–1%, iron oxides: 0.2–0.5%, organic carbon: 0.2–0.4%
• Color: blue-gray to dark gray, often streaked with white fossils
• Density: approx. 2.7 g/cm³
• Compressive strength: 120–180 MPa
• Flexural strength: 10–20 MPa
• Water absorption: very low
• Frost and weather resistance: very high

Thanks to its high density and durability, bluestone is suitable for both indoor and outdoor useDepending on the surface finish (polished, honed, flamed), the texture varies from smooth to rough – polished surfaces outdoors will become matte but retain their structure. Like all limestone, it is sensitive to acid and should be protected from contact with acidic cleaners or food.
